Once all the players are ready, the dealer deals the first three community cards faceup. After the cards are dealt, the remaining players are given one more card to add to their decks. Before the cards are dealt, a player must place a bet. The first bettor is responsible for the bet. Each subsequent player is responsible for matching the previous bettor’s bet. As the deal progresses, the player who bets the most is said to raise. All other players who have not checked must call the bet. Alternatively, a player can fold their hand by placing all of their cards face down on the table.
Before the cards are dealt, ante and blind bets are made. For stud games, the ante is usually twice as high in the final betting interval. Pot-limit games customarily place a maximum limit on the number of bets a player can make during the betting interval.
The last bettor must either call or raise. If the player does not raise, he or she is called to fold. Unlike stud, a pot-limit game allows players to bet or raise the pot without raising the ante.
Poker games can be played with up to eight players, but ideally, the number of players should be between six and eight. Poker is a fast-paced game and a lot of skill is required to succeed.
